Origami Convention 2011 Review

Update on Origami Convention 2011

I told you all about the biggest annual Origami convention in the US  - Origami Convention 2011 in NYC. Even NY Times covered the story on us!

It was such an overwhelming, eye-opening, but at the same time, exciting event I’ve ever been in my life. New friends, new origami patterns, and new community… it was such a busy day at Fashion Institute of Technology in Chelsea – Manhattan.

The rose video that I made features a design that is created by Toshikazu Kawasaki, who was actually our special guest this year. I was fortunate to be introduced by one of the participants, and got to say hello to him.

I got to visit the coolest exhibition too, where all the most famous folders from the world gather and show off their talent. When I entered the hall, I was like a 3 year old child in a toy store in the Christmas Season. I went back several times to this place just to look through the same exhibits over and over. Here are some pictures of what I saw.

I also took several classes. It was my first time trying tessellations, and this is how it looks like in the middle of process.

Another thing I learned was Traditional Spanish Box. It was my first time trying wet folding. My impression about it was overall good. It makes easier for me to fold and bend paper when the paper is so solid and thick. (Like scrap book paper and card stock paper) I’ll introduce you wet folding later on when I explore more on variations of boxes!

I made some new friends that also fold origami. And here are some of the examples what they are capable of folding! I was amazed with their precision in folding and knowledge about origami.
